Inclusion Inspires – music making a difference a free conference delivered by MusicLeader West Midlands, Youth Music and Symphony Hall on Monday 16th November.

For teachers and musicians leading music with young people who have special needs, physical and learning disabilities.

Learn about the best techniques and technologies, share skills and stories and try out the Patrick Music and Multimedia Studio and its equipment. For anyone working with music in school, mainstream or special, youth clubs, health settings, support groups.

This event is free to attend.

New Artist Led Initiative

Grand Union is a new artist-led initiative that supports the development of artists and curators within Birmingham. It aims to establish and nurture dialogue between contemporary visual artists and facilitate links between local, national and international art organisations.

On Friday 6th November at Fazeley Studios in Digbeths, Grand Union will host an artists’ publishing fair (12pm – 9pm), including stall holders such as Via Vaudeville, Ellie Harrison, Milk Two Sugars, Public Works, BAZ, Serena Korda, Caitlin Griffiths, Pest Publications, 4hb, [insertspace], Leisure Centre and a performance by The Artists’ Association of Autonomous Book Arts & Magazines (A.A.A.B.A.M.).

A.A.A.B.A.M. representative Calum F. Kerr will present A.A.A.B.A.M. RESTORED: That Was 2004. This Is Now. He’ll be wearing The Book Coat, a portable garment containing over 50 individual artist books.
Performance times Friday 6th November, 2-5pm and 6-9pm.

Grand Union will celebrate their opening with a new publication, with contributions from group members Helen Brown, Ian England, Mark Essen, Cheryl Jones, Karin Kihlberg & Reuben Henry, Charlie Levine, Alex Lockett, David Miller, Harminder Singh Judge, Joanna Spencer, Matt Westbrook, and Stuart Whipps.

The publication will be available at Grand Union, alongside a reading room full of artists’ books’ and independent publishing.

Grand Union is a not-for-profit organisation supported by the Arts Council and Birmingham City Council.

Opportunity for Writers

The Birmingham Book Festival encourages the city of Birmingham to engage with words – written, read or otherwise. It has evolved into a literature-focused arts organisation which recognises the value of participatory activity, inspirational thinking and creative writing. While its predominant delivery is of writing and reading based activities, it continues to pioneer unusual and innovative arts experiences which connect the West Midland with the communities in its midst.

Birmingham Book Festival are offering a CPD and networking opportunity for writers on 21st November at South Birmingham College.

The Writers’ Toolkit is our second annual gathering for emerging and established writers and anyone working in the writing industry. It offers a unique opportunity to learn about aspects of the business of being a writer and to network with others writing and working in literature development through a mixture of panel discussions and Q&A sessions.

Subjects covered include Understanding Publishing, Pitching Ideas, Social Networking for Writers, Working with the BBC, Writing with Communities, Promoting Poetry, Working with Agents and Writing in the Digital Age. Other individuals and organisations involved include Arts Council England, Writers’ Guild of Great Britain, Arvon Foundation, National Association of Writers in Education, BBC Radio Four, The National Academy of Writing and Bloodaxe Books.

Opportunity from Fused Magazine

Music industry folks and companies from the West Midlands are invited to apply to Fused Magazine to gain a place on a UKTI (UK Trade & Investment) funded visit to SXSW Music 2010 in Austin Texas from the 17th to 21st March 2010.

SXSW Music 2010 features hundreds of musical acts from around the globe on over eighty stages in downtown Austin Texas. By day, conference registrants do business in the SXSW Trade Show at the Austin Convention Center and partake in a full agenda of informative, provocative panel discussions featuring hundreds of speakers including; Artists, music supervisors, branding executives, digital media gurus, activists, label owners, festival bookers, bloggers and publicists. Previous speakers have included that guy Tom who invented Myspace and big shots from the world of music distribution and marketing.

The aim of this trip is to take a group of companies representing music in the region in order to network, develop partner relationships, increase international trade and meet companies interested in developing opportunities and investment in the West Midlands.

Power to the Pixel

Screen WM has announced that on 14th October Power to the Pixel is bringing a satellite event to Birmingham. The day long event will be held at Novotel Birmingham on Broad Street. This event is free to attend and will be of interest to anyone working in content creation (film, television, animation, games) and digital media.

Power to the Pixel’s London Forum is firmly established as the leading event in the UK film industry calendar for creators to connect with key digital innovators: pioneers who are developing new models of storytelling, film financing and film distribution across multiple platforms.

Power to the Pixel’s Birmingham event will feature sessions directly from the London Forum as well as studio debate from Birmingham. Sessions brought to you from London will include award-winning producer Ted Hope’s keynote presentation. International speakers including Slava Rubin, Co-Founder of New York-based IndieGoGo and Rachel Mordecai, producer and digital content strategist.
